Dear Campus Community,
This summer, we are making key investments in our campus to enhance security, sustainability, and the overall student experience. These projects will improve access, modernize facilities, and strengthen our infrastructure—all with the goal of making Puget Sound an even better place to learn, live, and work.
Here’s what’s coming:
Enhancing Campus Security & Access
We are completing the transition to a new campus card access system. Over the past year, we have upgraded key components of this system, and this fall, we will introduce new proximity-based ID cards. This technology will replace traditional swipe access, offering greater security and ease of use.
Upgrading Residential and Academic Spaces
- Campus Housing: Select residential spaces will receive new flooring, fresh paint, and updated furniture to create more comfortable and inviting living environments.
- Classroom Enhancements: Several classrooms across campus will receive new furniture to better support learning and collaboration.
Strengthening Our Electrical Infrastructure
We are continuing our transition to a higher-efficiency 12.47kV power system, replacing our outdated 4kV system. This upgrade will:
- Improve reliability by reducing power disruptions
- Enhance sustainability by reducing wasted energy
- Support future electrification efforts, such as transitioning away from natural gas
Athletic Facility Improvements
- Baseball & Softball Fields: We are actively fundraising for improvements to the baseball and softball fields. The baseball field will receive a new synthetic infield, while the softball field will undergo improvements related to ADA-accessible entry, improved sightlines, and press box relocation.
Investing in Sustainability
Sustainability remains a priority. With support from Tacoma Public Utilities, we plan to install a new electric vehicle charging station on campus, supporting campus and regional decarbonization.
Ongoing Maintenance & Additional Projects
We will also focus on general campus improvements, including:
- Building maintenance, such as interior painting, roof replacements, masonry repairs, and exterior wood restoration
- Mechanical system updates to enhance efficiency, reduce energy consumption, lower operational costs, and extend the lifespan of critical infrastructure
- Modest programmatic renovations to better meet evolving campus needs
Minimizing Disruptions & Keeping You Informed
While we anticipate some construction noise, dust, and temporary inconveniences, we are committed to minimizing disruption and will communicate any necessary updates. As we approach summer, we will be reaching out to those who will be directly impacted.
Your patience and support are greatly appreciated as we invest in the future of Puget Sound. If you have any questions, please feel free to email facilities@pugetsound.edu or contact me directly.
Thank you,
Robert M. Kief, CFM, CEFP, SFP | Associate Vice President for Facilities Services
