Herman brings more than 20 years of senior-level leadership experience in collegiate athletics, most recently serving as deputy athletics director and senior woman administrator at California State University, San Bernardino. She will succeed Amy Hackett, who retired in December 2024 after 21 years as the longest-serving athletics director in Logger history.

鈥淚 am absolutely elated to be named the next Athletics Director at the 兔子先生 and am honored, humbled, and energized to join this tremendously special community! I would especially wish to thank President Crawford, Vice President Sarah Comstock, DeLaina Sarden, Moe Stephens, the search committee, and all others who played a part in this process,鈥 Herman said. 鈥淧uget Sound is a world-class institution because of its people, and I am excited and ready to work together to create transformative experiences and lasting impact. Go Loggers!鈥
Previously, Herman held leadership positions at Seattle University, where she served as assistant athletics director for compliance and senior woman administrator. There, she coordinated NCAA compliance programs and provided rules education for student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
鈥淲e are excited to welcome Chelsea to Puget Sound,鈥 said Sarah Comstock, vice president for student affairs and dean of students. 鈥淗er collaborative and mission-driven leadership style, coupled with her deep understanding of collegiate athletics, will be instrumental in advancing our athletics program while maintaining our commitment to the transformative development of scholar-athletes, coaches, and staff.鈥
Herman holds a Ph.D. in sport ethics and sports administration from the University of Idaho, where her dissertation focused on supporting NCAA athletes through career transitions. She also earned a master鈥檚 degree in sport ethics and sports administration from Idaho and an executive MBA from Cal State San Bernardino.
At Cal State San Bernardino, Herman oversaw the athletics marketing, communications, ticketing, game operations, facilities, and fan engagement. She was promoted to deputy athletics director after serving four years as senior associate athletics director.
Herman will oversee Puget Sound鈥檚 athletics program, including 23 varsity sports, coaching staff, facilities, and strategic initiatives to support student-athlete success. She succeeds Jeff Thomas, head football coach, who served as interim athletics director following Hackett鈥檚 retirement. At Puget Sound, an estimated 28% of students participate in varsity athletics, reflecting a strong culture of teamwork, resilience, and school spirit. To learn more about Logger athletics, visit .
